RKB is an upside down house: sleeping and washing on the ground floor, living and cooking upstairs. This allows for three cosy double bedrooms and a light, spacious and open-plan space for kitchen/dining/relaxation. The master bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with low Morocco-influenced tadelakt bath with fibre optic overhead shower. At the other end of the barn is a King-sized double bedroom with an ethanol-burning fireplace.  It's served by a tadelackt bathroom with a comfortable contemporary roll top white bath with wooden spout and colour wheel LED mood lighting. A separate lavatory and a utility  room (with washing machine and tumble dryer)  completes the ground floor layout. The third double bedroom provides a snug nest from which to watch DVDs.

The upside down sleeping and living at RKB is very deliberate. It allows for fantastic natural light and volume upstairs, from where the long glazed panels give long views down our own wooded valley. The glazed western gable looks out on to sunsets over glorious moorland. This will be your view when preparing supper at the zinc-clad kitchen island. Dine at the reclaimed elm table whilst sitting on designer straw bales or antique Welsh pews. Afterwards play a game or two of pool with the 360 degree spinning log burner blazing, before kicking back on the double rocking sofa and watching your favourite film on the super-sized projection screen. Bedtime is an opportunity to sink into the squashy pillows and luxurious bedding, and to enjoy the super king- size Savoy beds with atmospheric riad-inspired lighting. The chances are that you will sleep soundly with only the occasional hooting of owls to disturb you.

The 'Good Life'

RKB is an 19 century traditional stone agricultural barn that has been restored with respect for tradition whilst injecting sustainable modern elements. The shell of the building is encased, top and bottom, in thick layers of insulation, with the use of lime and sheep wool . Damp proof membranes have been avoided in favour of these materials natural moisture regulation - this experiment means that we have been able to expose the rustic beauty of the stone walls. The foot-warming underfloor heating and hot water supply is provided from geothermal bore holes below the soil outside the barn. This geothermal source runs through a heat pump in the utility room, and is a more efficient way of producing heat than more conventional methods: as a result, there is no gas-fired boiler. Logs from our own forest are burned in the super-efficient German wood burner upstairs. The roof timbers were cut from mature conifers in our own woods. The local purple Welsh slates are salvaged. Even RKB's own water supply is pumped from its own borehole 60m down in the ancient rocks around the property, and gravity-fed from a header tank up the hillside to provide good water pressure inside the barn. It means we are vulnerable to the elements sometimes but as close as we can be to self sufficient.

RKB sits in it's own private woodland, extending to over 80 acres. Where this woodland ends, it blends into an apparently unending upland moorland owned by the National Trust. Pack your knapsack and strike out to the west: you are unlikely to meet another soul on your travels. Neither are you likely to get to the other side of the moorland! For a less ambitious yet rewarding yomp head off cross-country to the local, reputedly the oldest pub in Powys: the Red Lion in Llanafan Fawr. The church opposite is graced by a certified 2000 year old yew tree. The immediate forest round the barn was replanted by us five years ago.

If you like the idea of dining in at RKB without having to do the cooking yourself, we can organise our chef, Susannah, to whisk up a delicious gourmet meal for you, serve you and clear up after you. We can also organise for Layla and her birds of prey to come to you at RKB and you can fly the birds under her expert eye. Or perhaps you would prefer to saddle up (bicycle or steed)  and head off on an equestrian adventure over the moors. Total relaxation can follow with a sensual massage in the comfort of your own bedroom. Or even some Celtic Chamber music. Just let us know what you would like to do; we will do our best to arrange it for you.
